We had an uneventful journey except for the usual submarine scare and landed at New Caledonia on November 5, 1943... My work then consisted of the recovery and subsequent writing up of Captured Japanese Signal Equipment... It was during the Nip attack in March of the same year that I germinated the idea for a wire-tapping device... however by this time there were no Japs let alone wires to be tapped... As the war progressed I travelled with the vanguard hitting such places as AITAPE, BRISBANE, FINSCHAVEN, BIAK, HOLLANDIA, ADMIRALTY ISLANDS, MOROTAI, LEYTE, LUZON, and finally JAPAN. During this time I made four assault landings attempting to reach the Japanese equipment before it could be destroyed by our own troops. In Japan our group was mainly concerned with searching out manufacturing centers and reporting on their production, which in most cases of the installations I visited was nil..."; Partly-printed D.S., 2pp. 4to., Jamaica, New York, Sep. 12, 1945, Howind''s Officer''s and Warrant Officer''s Qualification Card, listing his campaign awards, qualifications, civilian occupation, and service record during the war; partly-printed D.S., 2pp. 4to., Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, March 1, 1946, Howind''s Report of Separation and Certificate of Service, describing his duties, the campaigns which he participated in and his awards; partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 4to., [n.p.], April 1, 1953, a certificate noting Howind''s honorable discharge from the U.S. Army; many additional original and facsimile documents related to Howind''s service, including vaccination records, security questionnaires, enlisted records, etc.; ten photographs, 8" x 10" b/w and smaller, individual and group portraits depicting Howind in uniform at various training sites, in varying condition; and more. Certainly worthy of further research, should be seen.
