Description:

Good pair of items signed by notable U.S. Army generals, includes: ALEXANDER M. HAIG (1924-2010) Supreme Allied Commander Europe who became Secretary of State. T.L.S. "Al" on SACEUR letterhead, 1p. 4to., Belgium, June 14, 1975, to Maj. Gen. Julius Klein, in part: "...From my perspective, the NATO Summit was a resounding success... First and foremost, our Allies needed and welcomed a demonstration of renewed U.S. interest in the Alliance, especially in the wake of affairs in Southeast Asia; secondly, I believe they were genuinely impressed... by the personal performance of the President himself... From all indicators, I am optimistic that the Middle East situation will provide us with another respite. There seems to be little doubt that the greatest difficulty in this regard will fall on the shoulders of Rabin, and my own experience with him leads me to believe that he will be up to the task..." He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, else very good. An 8" x 10" b/w portrait of Haig is also present. WITH: GEORGE L. EBERLE (d. 1978) U.S. Army Major General, chief of logistics of MacArthur's staff during the occupation of Japan. Surprising content A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Leesburg, July 18, 1958, to a Mr. Thompson, in full: "Although I know little of the details of Admiral Karl Doenitz trial and conviction as a war criminal, I am strongly opposed to the trial, ex post facto or otherwise, of an officer for his performance of professional duties. It is my opinion that Admiral Doenitz trial was unwarranted, unjust and illegal. (all sic)" He signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank. Shows original mailing folds, else fine.
