Description:

Fascinating photo album and scrapbook compiled by Lt. Edward Coleman of the 592nd Regiment, 2nd Engineer Special Brigade, 62pp. 17 1/2" x 14", primarily chronicling his experiences at New Britain, New Guinea and Luzon, with souvenirs and ephemera from elsewhere in the Pacific Theater as well. The photos primarily consist of numerous candid 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" snapshots taken by Coleman and hand-captioned on the page, primarily depicting amphibious landings at the above locations, the vessels and vehicles used, his fellow engineers, native inhabitants, U.S Aircraft and Navy vessels, wrecked Japanese ships, recreation while on leave in Australia, and more with several additional larger press photos with typed captions pasted alongside. He also includes a typed (and censored) account of an amphibious landing using the new LVT tracked landing vehicle, his "shellback" certificate celebrating his first crossing of the equator, two commemorative flyers listing his unit's deployments, pocket guides to New Guinea and the Netherlands East Indies and numerous additional newspaper clippings and articles of ephemera. Of particular interest are 25 pieces of paper currency and 36 coins collected by Coleman during his service, including Japanese occupation currency from the Dutch East Indies, Oceania and the Philippines, emergency currency issued by anti-Japanese guerillas in the Philippines, and official currency and coins from Australia, India, Japan, the Dutch East Indies, and more. Mounted along with these pieces is a Japanese Army rank collar tab. Many of the contents are detached or lost, but the album nevertheless retains a great wealth of information and relics, highly evocative of the Pacific War. Should be seen.
