Description:

U.S. ARMY AIR SERVICE IDENTIFIED AVIATOR''S "DALLAS" WINGS AND INSIGNIA
Excellent group of six pieces of insignia and one photograph, all attributed to U.S. Army Air Service 2nd Lieutenant W.P. Breen. Includes: Desirable and rare pair of pinback "Dallas"-pattern aviator''s wings, approx. 3 1/2" x 1", in silver with the initials "US" in gold at the center of the shield. The insignia is backed with black fabric over metal, with a horizontal pin secured by a rotating clasp. Unmarked, but constructed identically to examples produced by jewelers Bailey, Banks and Biddle. The silver elements are frosted overall, and the badge shows minor tarnish and expected wear, else very good. Also present are two alloy dog tags, each approx. 1" dia., identifying the aviator as 2nd Lt. W.P. Breen of the 186th Aero Squadron; Breen''s painted brass "U.S." collar insignia; a single Lieutenant''s bar; and a 3 1/4" x 2 1/4" sepia photograph, a chest-up view of the aviator in uniform, showing his "Dallas" wings and collar insignia, set into a period brass frame. All very good. The 186th was assigned as an Army Observation Squadron in France, and performed strategic reconnaissance duties over the entire length of the Western Front. They were also engaged in testing captured German aircraft following the Armistice.
