Description:

U.S. ARMY AIR FORCES CAPTAIN'S NORTH AFRICA SOUVENIR MUG AND SCRAPBOOK
Silvered brass mug, approx. 4 3/4" x 3 1/2" dia., finely engraved with a highly detailed and well-labeled map of North Africa, charting the American advances from the Operation Torch landings in Morocco and Algeria in November of 1942, as well as the British push westward from El Alamein, culminating in the meeting of the two forces and the surrender of the Afrika Korps in May of 1943. The engraving also states that the brass used in the manufacture of the mug was salvaged from various North African battlefields, and the engraving was almost certainly executed by a local craftsman. Shows a dent to the bottom, with scattered spots of tarnish overall, else very good. Also present is the scrapbook of Capt. Lewis L. Austin of the U.S. Army Air Forces' 350th Fighter Group, approx. 45pp. folio, containing numerous maps, brochures, telegrams, letters, newspaper clippings, matchbooks and other articles of ephemera related to his stateside postings and his service in North Africa. Of the latter, the most notable include menus from the U.S. Army transport ship URUGUAY, a North Africa decorum guide, stationery and calling cards from North African bars and restaurants, and more. Two pieces.
