Description:

U.S. 77TH INFANTRY DIVISION TUNIC AND PANTS
A very good American World War I uniform, a green wool tunic and pants worn by a member of the 77th Infantry. The regulation tunic bears four scallop-flapped button down pockets and five buttons at front, all being original to the garment. A 77th Infantry Division 'Statue of Liberty' patch is hand-sewn to the left shoulder, and further down that sleeve appear an overseas service chevron and a red discharge chevron. Brass 'U.S.' and U.S.N.A.' discs are affixed to the collar. The trousers are likewise official issue, issued by the Quartermaster at St. Louis and stamped by a woman inspector, the bottom of the pants legs bearing ties to secure them to the wearer's legs. The bottoms of the trousers have been roughly trimmed. A little bit of moth damage to the bottom of the left breast pocket, otherwise very good. The 77th Division was composed of draftees from New York City and the adjoining counties. It reached France in April 1918 and fought in the Battle of Chateau-Thierry and later in the Meuse–Argonne offensive, the largest battle in the history of the United States Army. During its service in France, the 77th Division sustained 10,194 casualties: of these 1,486 men were killed and another 8,708 were wounded.
