Description:

US Army handheld, battery-operated radio receiver and transmitter, 16 in. x 3.25 in. x 3.25 in., known as a "Walkie Talkie" or a "Handy Talkie". The unit is housed in a rectangular olive drab aluminum body with an extendable aerial and aerial cover at the top. The base is secured with a latching bolt and opens on a hinge to provide internal access. This base section also has a two-point socket for external headset and external microphone under a weatherproof flap. On the main body are earphone and microphone units and a rubber-sealed "press to talk" switch, above a paper data card reading "FREQ. 3885 KC" behind a plastic window. Above the switch is stenciled in white, "BEFORE OPERATING READ TM-11-235". Secured above the mouthpiece is a maker's plate, reading: "SIGNAL CORPS...U.S. ARMY...RADIO RECEIVER AND TRANSMITTER BC-611-F...35502...ORDER NO. 8259-PHILA-45-01... MADE BY ELECTRICAL RESEARCH LABORATORIES INC. EVANSTON ILLINOIS". An olive drab adjustable webbing carry strap is attached to the unit. Batteries not included, and functionality not tested. The unit is housed in a green canvas carrying bag with shoulder strap, stenciled on the side "CASE CS156... S.C. No. 2Z1890-156" in black lettering. Very good to fine. This is an example of a later model 'F' of the "walkie-talkie", which were originally developed in 1940 to provide light portable radio communications for ground troops within a range of about 1.6 km.
