Description:

Interesting trench art model of a German U-boat, 13 ¾" long, crafted from aluminum and mounted on a slightly larger wood base. The underside of this base bears the signature of HANS GOEBELER (1923-1999) in silver ink, along with his identifying inscription in German: "Crew Member U-505 1941-1944 Control Room". A small painted metal "Reichskriegsflagge", removed from the model, is also taped to the underside of the base. In very good condition. The U-505 was attacked and badly damaged by an anti-submarine group based around the escort carrier USS GUADALCANAL on June 4, 1944. Goebler, as one of the last crewmembers to abandon ship, opened the seacocks to scuttle the submarine, but U.S. Navy boarding parties managed to save the U-boat from sinking. The U-505 is now on display at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.
