TWO BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY OF JOHN COLVILLE, 8TH LORD COLVILLE OF CROSS
(JOHN COVILLE) (1725-1811) Scottish army officer who served in the Battle of Fontenoy, Siege of Ostend, Battle of Colloden and Gibraltar. Appointed Inspector-General of the Outposts following his retirement from the military (1763). A pair of bound monthly publications from his library, namely ‘The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure…and Other Arts and Sciences' (London: ‘Act of Parliament', 1777 and 1779), twelve volumes in each, 8vo. and rebound in marbled boards with leather banded spine and gilt title thereat. Both display the original engraved bookplate with Colville's elaborate coat of arms affixed to the interior front cover. The 1777 book has a tipped-in map titled A New and Accurate Map of the Present Seat of War in North America, 11.25 x 13.25 in. (fold tear and tape repairs), while the 1779 volume has two tipped-in maps, each 11.25 x 13.25 in.: ‘A New and Accurate Map of the Province of Georgia in the United States', and ‘A New and Accurate Map of the Province of South Carolina in the United States' (both maps exhibit fold tears). Both books are in very good condition. WITH: a separate map from the same monthly, Dec. 1770, 11.25 x 13.25 in., titled ‘A New and Accurate Map of the Kingdom of Ireland'. Three pieces.
