Description:

"TWELVE MONTHS OF KYOTO" JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTS BY UCHIDA
Complete set of twelve Japanese woodblock prints, each 10 1/4" x 11 1/2" and mounted in a 13 1/2" x 15" mat, by TOKURIKI TOMIKICHIRO (1902-2000) and printed by the Uchida company of Kyoto, circa 1950. Each finely executed and colored print depicts a scene from various locations in Kyoto for each month. The scenes depicted include a procession through a series of Torii gates for February, a parade of lantern-bedecked floats at Gion Temple for July, and a bonfire on Daimonji Hill for August. Each scene uses human figures, weather and other effects to perfectly capture the atmosphere of the months they seek to portray. Each print bears the artist''s printed signature with the publisher''s mark of Uchida, as well as a number on the verso indicating the print''s position in the set. The verso of each print also bears a pencil inscription with the set number and a description of the month and the scene depicted, and a black ink "SAMPLE" stamp. These prints were salesman''s samples acquired by a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Thomas Hood, who sold these prints in the eastern United States on behalf of Uchida. These are excellent examples of "Sosaku hanga" prints, which were produced based on a Western model of printmaking, in which the artists retained creative control over their works, and which utilized a unique synthesis of Japanese and Western aesthetic techniques. Some toning and tears to the mounts, else very good. Sold without the original paperboard folder.
