TURNER ASHBY AND HARRY GILMOR
HARRY GILMOR (1838 - 1883) Confederate cavalry officer and leader of the partisans, 'Gilmor's Raiders'. During the Gettysburg Campaign, Gilmor commanded the 1st and 2nd Md. Cavalry under Steuart. After Monocacy on July 9, 1864, Gilmor's command made a series of daring raids around Baltimore going as far east as Magnolia Station. There they proceeded to wreck two trains, a railroad bridge, and capture Union Gen. William B. Franklin. Gilmor himself was captured in February, 1865 while raiding railroads in West Virginia and held until the end of the war. Excessively rare war-date partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., ‘Camp in Valley of Virginia', June 30, 1862, a forage requisition for 65 horses, signed ‘H. W. Gilmor'. Also endorsed by TURNER ASHBY (1828-1862), a Confederate brigadier general of cavalry in the Shenandoah, under the command of Stonewall Jackson. Killed leading an infantry charge at Harrisonburg, Va. while exhorting his men to follow. Fine. Gilmor is rare in any format, especially during the war, Ashby a bit less so.
