460.  HARRY S. TRUMAN T.L.S. as President, 1p, 4to, The White House, May 1, 1945, to Basil O'Connor, former law partner of FDR and President of the American Red Cross. In part: "...I have today informed Mrs. Roosevelt that I shall be happy to act as Honorary Chairman of the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Memorial Committee...". Written less than three weeks after Roosevelt's death. On April 12, 1945, Truman was urgently called to the White House, where Eleanor Roosevelt informed him that the president was dead following a massive stroke. Truman's first concern was for Mrs. Roosevelt. He asked if there was anything he could do for her, to which she replied, "Is there anything we can do for you? For you are the one in trouble now".
