HARRY S. TRUMAN (1884 - 1972) 33rd President of the United States who led the country in the closing days of World War II and through the re-building of Europe under the Marshall Plan and the Korean War. An exceptional typed D.S. as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington [April 9, 1946], a Citation for Legion of Merit, Degree of Legionnaire, presented to a Russian officer who distinguished himself for valor and service to the allies during World War II. It reads, in part: "...Colonel Maxim Filipovic Igantov, Assistant Corps Commander, 121st Corps, Red Army, performed outstanding services from 5 April to 5 May 1945...He ably and firmly carried out plans which resulted in the rapid advance of the Russian forces westward from the Oder River to a junction with the American armies... ". Boldly signed by Truman, with the actual Legion of Merit certificate with embossed medal. Co-signed by Secretary of War ROBERT B. PATTERSON and the Adjutant General of the Army. Two pieces, fine condition. Certainly rare in this format! $1,000-1,500
