Description:

A fine, good content, war date unsigned manuscript., 1p. 8vo., Virginia, May 22, 1862, the transcript of a telegraph sent by Union officer Robert Copeland (1830-1874) to Union major general Nathaniel P. Banks (1816-1894) who was attempting to acquire more men during the Shenandoah Valley campaign. In part: '...I have just returned from a tour of General Cooper's command. If you can get it intact you will be well satisfied...Men rather young, well disciplined, on duty. Camps neat. Men respectful and earnest...Two squadrons good cavalry total 3800 men well-armed...with some field experience, you will like them. I have telegraphed to Gooch and Hooper to jog the memory of the Secretary [of War]. If you telegraph to him direct, I will add General Dix opposes and will prevent the reduction of his command if possible...' Gen. James Cooper (1810-1863) was a Union brigadier general and senator for the state of Pennsylvania. Daniel Gooch (1820-1891) was a U.S congressman from Massachusetts. John Dix (1798-1879) served as a Union major general during the Civil War and as governor of New York. Adhesive stains around the margins from having been mounted, else fine. This letter was written only a day before the Battle of Fort Royal in which Confederate forces under Stonewall Jackson engaged a small garrison of Union troops under the command of Nathaniel Banks. The results were lopsided, but it forced Union forced Banks to retreat to Winchester. On May 25, Jackson engaged Union forces again, this time dealing Bank's a decisive blow and earning the first Confederate victory of Jackson's Shenandoah Valley campaign. His audacity caused disruption of Union plans for a campaign to take Richmond as they instead had to divert troops to defend Washington.
