Description:

U.S. Model 1861 rifle-musket, commonly known as the "Springfield" for its predominant place of manufacture, .58 caliber, 40" barrel, 55 1/2" overall, with the lockplate dated "1863" and marked "U.S. Trenton" with an American eagle, indicating that it was manufactured under contract by the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Co. in Trenton, New Jersey. The top of the barrel at the breech is also dated "186[...]" with the final numeral obscured by a small gouge. The breech end is additionally marked "V P" with an eagle's head, above the initials "N.J.", for New Jersey. The side of the stock opposite the lockplate bears a single cartouche, not legible but likely also reading "N.J." The top of the wrist is marked "F", and the top of the butt bears the rack number "36". The metal components bear an even brown patina overall, but for the muzzle which is bright where protected by a bayonet socket over a long period of storage. Little to no oxidation is present. The stock shows expected handling marks overall, with a tight crack at the wrist just behind and connecting the lockplate and barrel tang. The ramrod is a later replacement featuring a slotted and grooved head. The bore shows even oxidation with no apparent pitting and strong rifling. NRA grade very good to fine. Sold with a Model 1861 socket bayonet, 18" blade, 21" overall, faintly marked "U.S." at the tang, showing the same dark brown patina as the rifle overall. No scabbard is present. Two pieces.
