Description:

TREATY WITH THE KASKASKIAS INDIANS
Scarce printed treaty, "Treaty Between the United States and the Kaskaskias and Others", 8pp. legal folio, Washington, May 13, 1854, signed in type by Franklin Pierce, William L. Marcy, and seven Indian delegates. In the treaty, the Kaskaskias, Peoria, Piankeshaw and Wea Indians ceded back to the U.S. all lands given to them under an 1832 treaty, reserving only 160 acres for each tribe member, with the remaining lands to be sold at public auction or at minimum government public land sale rates. The tribes further agree to forego further government annuities in exchange for a lump-sum payout, and promise to use their best efforts to "prevent the introduction and use of ardent spirits [alcohol] in their country...". The document also includes a list of the phonetically-spelled names of all family elders, along with the numbers of males and females in each family in order to calculate the number of acres to which each family is entitled. Cover is stained, else very good.
