Lot 743
743. TREATY OF GREENVILLE A.D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Greenville, July 1, 1795, in which a Mr. Wells is reimbursed sixty rations: "...for the month of June, for finding & supporting an Indian Warrior of the (de ?) river tribe for the said month..." There is more taking place here than first appears. After their decisive defeat by Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers on August 20 of 1794, the Indians of a number of allied tribes had to be found and brought in to Greenville in order to negotiate a peace with the whites. After some negotiations this treaty, called the Treaty of Greenville, was signed on August 3, 1795. Since this document was signed just over a month before the conclusion of the treaty, the Indian mentioned in this document was almost certainly involved in the treaty negotiations in some way. Near fine condition. $200-300
