Description:

(1890 - 1976) German general during World War II who commanded the 14th Army and the 10th Army of the Wehrmacht, a recipient of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. Great content A.L.S. in German, 3pp. 8vo., Bridgend, April 22, 1948, a grateful letter to Major Fred Biere of the International Red Cross, written just one month before his release from Allied captivity. In large part: '...A few days ago we received the news that now also the General's camp Bridgend will be disintegrated and that we are waiting to be released on May 15 from Harwich. This return after nine years of absence and under different circumstances requires a lot of mental strength for many of us. But the happiness over final freedom from the barbed wire will sustain us at least in the beginning. Unfortunately, we won't be able to help our families...since the trade of Ex-Generals is no longer in demand, and since several of us - including myself - because of our head injuries are physically no longer in top shape....As one of the oldest serving local officers at the end of our long imprisonment I would like to express my deep felt thanks to you, Mr. Bieri, and to the International Red Cross for the love and welfare we received and which was the only shimmer of light in this confusing time.' Two file holes, light creases, else fine. Sold with a translation.
