Description:

TRANSATLANTIC CABLE SEGMENT
An actual segment of the first trans-Atlantic cable laid between Ireland and Newfoundland in 1858 by Cyrus Field. The segment is about 4" long with cross-sections visible at both ends and banded with a bronze label reading: "ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH CABLE - GUARANTEED BY - TIFFANY & CO. BROADWAY, NEW YORK 1858". Tiffany had purchased a length of the cable and produced a limited number of such sections as souvenirs, which were accompanied by lithographed letters by Field (not present). A great relic for telegraphy collectors. Some oxidation, else very good.
