Description:

TOMOYULI YAMASHITA
(1885 - 1946) Japanese general of World War II, the "Tiger of Malaysia" led forces in the capture of Malaya and Singapore and did not surrender until September 2, 1945. Hanged for war crimes. A superb grouping of material related to Yamashita and his surrender and trial, includes: a Japanese Philippine five centavo occupation note, signed by Yamashita in both English and Japanese characters; an original vintage silverprint photo, 8" x 10", showing Yamashita and English Lt. Gen. Arthur Percival at the surrender table in Singapore on Feb. 15, 1942 after Singapore' surrender, with Japanese label on verso describing the scene; two apparently original and unpublished photos, each 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" showing Yamashita and an aide surrendering and being marched into captivity, with a [soldier's?] explanation on verso; an original photo, same size, of Yamashita with counsel at his trial at the end of 1945; and a Signal Corps wire photo of the general defending himself at his trial. Very good.
