Description:

(TOKYO WAR CRIMES TRIBUNAL) BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARIES OF JAPANESE WAR CRIMINALS
The International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE), popularly known as the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal, convened in April 1946 to try leaders of the Empire of Japan for their crimes against peace, conventional war crimes, and crimes against humanity, leading up to and during World War II. Presented here is a mimeographed document utilized during these proceedings, 42pp. legal folio, a memo containing biographical summaries of 26 of the principal Japanese defendants, including: former Minister of War and nationalist right-wing political theorist SADAO ARAKI (1877-1966); Imperial Japanese Army general and intelligence officer KENJI DOIHARA (1883-1948), who was instrumental in fomenting the invasion of Manchuria and establishing the puppet state of Manchukuo; right-wing political leader and coup plotter KINGORO HASHMOTO (1890-1957); IJA field marshal and former Minister of War SHUNROKU HATA (1879-1962); former Prime Minister and President of the Privy Council KIICHIRO HIRANUMA (1867-1952); former Prime Minister KOKI HIROTA (1878-1948); NAOKI HOSHINO (1892-1978), chief cabinet secretary under Hideki Tojo; IJA general and former Minister of War SEISHIRO ITAGAKI (1885-1948); former Minister of Finance OKINORI KAYA (1889-1977); Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal KOIICHI KIDO (1889-1977); IJA general HEITARO KIMURA (1888-1948); former Prime Minister KUNIAKI KOISO (1880-1950); IJA general IWANE MATSUI (1878-1948), the officer chiefly responsible for the Rape of Nanjing; former Minister of Foreign Affairs YOSUKE MATSUOKA (1880-1946); IJA general and Governor of Korea JIRO MINAMI (1874-1955); IJA general AKIRA MUTO (1892-1946); former Chief of the Imperial Japanese Navy General Staff OSAMI NAGANO (1880-1947); former Chief of the Naval Affairs Bureau TAKAZUMI OKA (1890-1973); nationalist ideologue and propagandist SHUMEI OKAWA (1886-1957); Japanese ambassador to Germany HIROSHI OSHIMA (1886-1975); IJA general KENRYO SATO (1895-1975); former Minister of the Navy SHIGETARO SHIMADA (1883-1976); Japanese ambassador to Italy TOSHIO SHIRATORI (1887-1949); IJA general and economic advisor TEIICHI SUZUKI (1888-1989); former Minister of Foreign Affairs SHIGENORI TOGO (1882-1950); and former Primer Minister and Minister of the Army HIDEKI TOJO (1884-1948). Of these, Doihara, Hirota, Itagaki, Kimura, Muto, Matsui and Tojo were sentenced to death by hanging, while a further sixteen defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment. Matsuoka and Nagano died of natural causes during the trial, while the charges against Okawa were dropped when he was found to be mentally unfit. The memo presented here lists the positions held by each man, and details their specific crimes and contributions to the Japanese campaign of nationalistic aggression. This particular copy of the document originates from the archives of American associate counsel for the prosecution DAVID NELSON SUTTON (1895-1974), who was responsible for gathering witness testimony related to Japanese war crimes in China, including the Rape of Nanjing. Sutton likely contributed much of its content, as well as consulting it during the IMTFE. It shows some toning overall, mostly to the first and final pages, with paper clip marks to these same pages and some folds and chips throughout, otherwise in very good condition.
