(TITANIC)
BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY OF ARCHITECT EDWARD A. KENT
EDWARD A. KENT (1854-1912) American architect in Buffalo, New York, died during the sinking of the RMS TITANIC.A set of nine French reference books from Kent's personal library, each bearing his ownership handstamp on the first free endpaper. The volumes are 6.25 x 4.5 in. hardbound in linen wraps, approx. 75-90pp each., and comprise a series of design books published by the ‘Bibliotheque Populaire des Ecoles de Dessin' (Paris: Jules Rouan, 1884). Titles include (translated): ‘Decorative Arts of the Eighteenth Century: Louis XIV Style', ‘Goldsmithing', ‘Decorative Arts of Greece: Statues and Clothing', ‘The Cities of Vesuvius: An Exploration into an Ancient City', and more. Some pages detached but overall volumes are in very good condition, with just interior toning. In early 1912, Kent traveled to France and Egypt for two months, and planned to retire upon his return home to Buffalo. However, he delayed his trip home to partake of a once-in-a-lifetime first-class trip on the maiden voyage of the TITANIC. During the voyage he mingled with socialites and writers alike before perishing during the sinking while helping women and children into the lifeboats. Nine pieces.
