Description:

(TIRPITZ) 617 SQUADRON SIGNED MENU
A fine signed document, a menu bearing the signatures of some of the primary figures involved in the sinking of the German battleship TIRPITZ by aerial bombardment by the RAF 617 Squadron on Nov. 12, 1944. The 4pp. 8vo. printed menu was printed for the 'Reunion Dinner to mark the 30th Anniversary of the sinking of the 'Tirpitz', given by veteran members of 617 Squadron at the Royal Air Force Club, London on Nov. 9, 1974. The last page of the menu is signed by 28 attendees, most of them presumably veteran members of the squadron. Included is RAF Marshal ARTHUR T. HARRIS (1892-1984), Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) RAF Bomber Command during the height of the Anglo-American strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany; Air Chief Marshal RALPH COCHRANE (1895-1977), best known for his role in Operation Chastise, the famous 'Dambusters' raid and low-level target marking using 617 Squadron; and Group Captain JAMES BRIAN 'WILLIE' TAIT (1916-2007), who conducted 101 bombing missions during the war, including the one that finally sank the Tirpitz. Considered one of the U.K.'s greatest airmen. Other signatures, not researched by us, very likely include additional veterans of the Tirpitz attack, or the Dambuster attack. Simply framed with both sides of the document visible.
