TIMOTHY PICKERING
(1745 - 1829) American politician and Adjutant General of the Continental Army, Secretary of War (1795) and Secretary of State (1795-1800). Fine content A.L.S. as Secretary of State, 1p. 4to., Washington, Feb. 24, 1797 to Carlos Martinez de Irujo (1765-1824), Spanish Prime Minister and Minister to the United States. In part: 'The Secretary of States takes the liberty to inclose the forms of Sea-letters now given to vessels of the United States, one of which may be adopted and translated into Spanish, if the Chevalier de Yrujo has no form annexed to the copy of the treaty between Spain and the United States...The Secretary prays the Chevalier to inform him on this point, that the passports may be prepared without delay, as it will take some time to transmit them to the distant ports of the United States....' Fine condition. Spain and Great Britain were at war in 1797, and these sea letters were crucial in identifying neutral American vessels.
