Description:

TIANANMEN SQUARE PUBLICATIONS
Good lot of eight softcover books, one in English six in Chinese, and one bilingual, all related to the 1989 Tiananmen Square student-led protests in Beijing. Five of the books in Chinese are propagandistic chronicles of the protests, critical of the student movement which instigated them and supportive of the Chinese government and the military forces which put them down. They are entitled as follows, roughly translated: "Beijing June Wave Style", "Defend the Socialist Republic", In the Day of Martial Law", and "Martial Law Day" (Volumes 1 and 2). Of these, the first two listed contain many b/w and color photographs depicting the protests, the important figures involved, the violent suppression of the protestors, and the aftermath. The remaining three volumes are text only. A sixth publication, entitled "Quelling the Counter-Revolutionary Rebellion in Beijing", edited by The PLA Pictorial Office (Beijing: The Great Wall Publishing House), [1989], 68pp. 4to., is entirely comprised of color and b/w pictures of the protests, with English and Chinese captions severely critical of the protestors and supportive of the government in military. It features many images of dead and wounded soldiers, purportedly attacked by the protestors. Lastly are two publications that take a critical stance towards the government''s actions. These are: "The Gate of Heavenly Peace" (Hong Kong: Mirror Books), [1995], 8vo., a Chinese-language companion volume to a 1995 documentary of the same name by Richard Gordon and Carma Hinton, which was attacked as being both overly supportive and overly critical of the student protestors; and "The Pro-Democracy Protests in China", edited by Jonathan Unger (Sydney: Allen & Unwin), 1991, 239pp. 8vo., a collection of essays by western scholars and professors, examining the background of the protests and their fallout, generally taking a supportive stance towards the protestors. All are very good. Chinese material related to the Tiananmen Square protests, regardless of viewpoint, is very rare outside of the country, with only a few editions though to have been exported.
