Description:

THREE UNION GENERALS
A war-date L.S. 2pp. 4to., ‘Head Qrs 13th N.Y.V. Camp near…Bridge Va', June 2, 1862 signed by Col. ELISHA G. MARSHALL. Four days before the Battle of Memphis, Marshall requests new recruits to replace those sick or on furlough, due to how easy it is for ‘…men to get a certificate of sickness & even a certificate of disability…' and the presumption that ‘many of the men who are granted furlough do not intend to return…'. Endorsed on verso by JOHN H. MARTINDALE (1815 - 1881), Union brigadier general who commanded forces at Malvern Hill, Cold Harbor and Petersburg until resigning due to poor health caused by typhoid fever; FITZ JOHN PORTER (1822-1901), Union major general who fought at Second Bull Run and Antietam. He was later accused by Pope of 'disobedience and disloyalty' and was relieved from command; and GEORGE W. PORTER (1815-1883), Union brigadier general who commanded a division in the Army of the Potomac only to have his career cut-short by his defense of Fitz John Porter during the latter's court martial. Very good.
