Description:

THREE BLACK WAR SOLDIER'S MEDALS, PROMOTION, AND DISCHARGE (5)
Excellent grouping of four items, all related to the military service of Sgt. William B. Cunningham, 1057235, a Black U.S. Army staff sergeant (temp.) serving as a cook in the Q.M.C. and in the 'F.A.S. Det. (Colored)' as late as 1942. Served in three conflicts: The Mexican Border War, World War I, and World War II. Included in this lot is Cunningham's Mexican Service Medal with ribbon, the edge engraved 'M. No. 177', complete with ribbon; and his World War I Victory Medal, also with ribbon, both medals very good, though ribbons frayed. Also present is: Cunningham's first discharge, 2pp. 4to., Governors Island, NY, Mar. 13, 1921. Cunningham, described as 'Black' and from Lancaster, South Carolina, has completed his seven-year term of enlistment. It also notes he has reenlisted on Nov. 17, 1921, and sent to Fort Sill. His service is shown to have been in New Mexico. This document is badly damaged, with multiple tape tears and old tape repairs; with his discharge, 1p. oblong 4to., Fort Sill, OK, Mar. 10, 1942, Cunningham's promotion to staff sergeant; along with an original 7 x 5 in. b/w presumably showing Cunningham and nine other black cooks, orderlies, and officers standing before a tent, probably at Fort Sill. A few creases and tape remnants. Overall very good.
