ROSE HARTWICK THORPE (1850-1939) American poet and suffrage worker, greatly influenced by Longfellow and Lydia Sigourney. Her poem "The Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight" was appreciated locally until 1870 when it was sent to a Detroit newspaper. The success was immediate and overwhelming - although of no financial gain to Thorpe who died nearly penniless. Scarce A.Q.S. 6pp. 4to., [n.p.], Apr. 18, 1914, the complete text of her famous poem "The Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight", signed in full at conclusion. Fine. Sold with a first edition illustrated printing of the poem, Boston, 1883, by Lee and Shepard. Also fine. $300-400
