ROSE HARTWICK THORPE (1850-1939) American poet and suffrage worker, greatly influenced by Longfellow and Lydia Sigourney. Her poem "The Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight" was appreciated locally until 1870 when it was sent to a Detroit newspaper. The success was immediate and overwhelming - although of no financial gain to Thorpe who died nearly penniless.
