"THOROUGHLY CRITICIZE THE GANG OF FOUR'S ANTI-PARTY GROUP OF HEINOUS CRIMES"
Large and vibrant Chinese political poster, "Thoroughly Criticize the Gang of Four's Anti-Party Group of Heinous Crimes", by Liu Qi Wen and Liang Yan (Hebei: Hebei People's Publishing House), 1977, first edition of 32,000, 30" x 20 3/4", depicting a soldier, a steel worker, and a farmer with their fists raised in protest in front of a steel factory. The farmer holds a newspaper bearing the headline: "The Gang of Four is Disastrous". The title of the piece is printed in red Chinese characters beneath the image, with the characters for "Gang of Four" printed in black. The "Gang of Four" was a clique headed by Mao Zedong's wife, Jiang Qing, which dominated Chinese politics in the late stages of the Cultural Revolution. Following Mao's death in 1976, they were blamed for the worst excesses of that period, and Jiang was sentenced to death. The poster bears three sets of staple holes at the left edge, with a 1/2" tear at the bottom edge, else very good. From a single collection obtained entirely in China pre-2000.
