Lot 109
109. M. JEFF THOMPSON (1826-1876) Confederate raider who commanded a brigade in Missouri and threatened to retake New Orleans from Union forces. Rare war-date A.D.S. as brigadier general, 1p. oblong 8vo., "Head Quarters Shelly's Brigade", Booneville, Mo., Oct. 11, 1864 to Gov. Claiborne Jackson. In part: "...I would try to get to see you but am needed every moment with the Brigade. I know you are pleased with what you hear of the manner of my Brigade conducted affairs at Booneville-although I hear this morning of some outrages that I will try to have ferreted out, and the guilty parties found. Please send me my saddlebags by the bearer...I did propose making a speech to the people of Booneville but do not know whether it will be permitted..." At the time, "bushwhackers" were running rampant in Missouri, and Thompson was of course powerless to find the perpetrators. Fine condition. $1,000-1,500
