(1861-1933) United States Attorney General under President Woodrow Wilson, one of the framers of the Espionage and Sedition Acts during World War I. A fine pair of signed items, includes: Signature "T.W. Gregory" in black ink on the front cover of a 22pp. 8vo. pamphlet entitled "Reconstruction and the Ku Klux Klan", reprinting a speech given by Gregory before the Arkansas and Texas Bar Associations on July 10, 1906. In the dissertation, Gregory explains the rise of the Ku Klux Klan in the years immediately following the Civil War, in light of the humiliation and economic catastrophe faced by the Southern states, labeling the group "... the most thoroughly organized, extensive and effective vigilance committee the world has ever seen, or is likely to see..." Gregory signs on the front cover from Austin, Texas, adding the dedication: "With kindest regards of the author". The pamphlet shows a vertical fold, with slight toning and foxing, else very good. WITH: T.L.S. "T.W. Gregory", 1p. 4to., Austin, Sep. 14, 1907, Gregory's letter of transmittal for the above pamphlet, forwarding it to Harrisonburg, Virginia lawyer John E. Roller. In part: "... I appreciate your motive in desiring to preserve such history for your children as may keep them informed of the history made by southern people, but unfortunately written by northern men..." Gregory signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows some damp stains, with consequent softening to the signature, else very good. Two pieces.
