Description:

THOMAS STONE
(1743 - 1787) Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Maryland and wealthy businessman, he later refused to sign the Articles of Confederation and declined to attend the Constitutional Convention. War date A.Ms. (unsigned), 1p. 4to., [n.p., but likely Maryland], April, 1777. The document appears to be a list of sums received or paid for legal services, the document headed: 'Cont[inenta]'l & State money...an acct. of H. H. Esq. from Apl[?] 1st 1776...'. Various names are listed, including 'James Stearns[?]' and 'William Murdock Beall' (1742-1823), a prominent landowner (and owner of many slaves), who sat as a judge in Frederick Co. Maryland in several capacities, fought in the French and Indian War, and was a member of the Frederick County Committee of Safety. There follows a column of figures for the months January, 1776 through March, 1777 which is headed: 'Recd for Land Warrt[?]'. Regrettably, Stone's hand is rushed and a bit sloppy, and a small bit of the text is faded. Docketed on the verso, but illegible. Damp stained, with some loss at the right margin, yet still rare and desirable.
