Description:

THOMAS SHIPP AND ABRAM SMITH LYNCHING
Two photographic prints, both 8" x 10" b/w, and one celluloid negative, 5" x 7", reproducing Lawrence Beitler's infamous photograph of the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith on Aug. 7, 1930. Shipp, Smith, and another young man named James Cameron were accused of shooting Claude Deeter, a white factory worker, and raping Mary Ball, Deeter's girlfriend. The three men were abducted from jail by a lynch mob and hung from a nearby tree. Shipp and Smith died, but Cameron was freed when one of the mob convinced the others that Cameron had nothing to do with the crime. Cameron would go on to found several chapters of the NAACP, as well as the America's Black Holocaust museum in Milwaukee. The negative was made from a positive print, most likely during the nationwide distribution of the image. It is slightly stained and scratched with age, but is otherwise in very good shape. The two prints have sustained water damage, and are heavily wrinkled and flaking.
