THOMAS POWNALL
Partly-printed D.S. 'Th.Pownall', 1p. 14 x 12 in., Boston, Feb. 20, 1760. Pownall signs a French and Indian War military appointment of Ezra Newhall as '...Ensign in the Battn. of a Regiment of Foot whereof Brig. Genl. Timty, Ruggles Esq. is Colonel & in Capt. Jenk's Compy, Raised by me to be employed in His Majesty's Service the Ensuing Campaign...'. Embossed paper seal affixed. Boldly signed by Pownall as Captain General, Vice Admiral and Governor in Chief over the British Province of Massachusetts-Bay, this just seven months before Montreal would be surrendered to the British, thus ending most of the fighting on the continent. Countersigned by ANDREW OLIVER (1776-1774). General even toning; occasional foxing; small repairs at two fold intersections; tiny nicks at right edge; manuscript text is generally dark with occasional light fading. Appears to have a thin woven cloth backing and laid to old wood mount. Ensign Newhall would later serve as lieutenant colonel at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Andrew Oliver later was appointed the distributor of stamps in Massachusetts under the hated Stamp Act imposed by the British Parliament to help pay for the war on the continent. In April 1765, he was hung in effigy from a large elm tree in Boston that became known as the 'Liberty Tree'. His home was looted by the protesting crowd of citizens, and his office destroyed. He was later forced to publicly resign under the Liberty Tree, but went on to become lieutenant governor in 1770. With Governor Hutchinson, he recommended troops be sent to America.
