Description:

THOMAS MIFFLIN
(1744 - 1800) American Revolutionary officer, President of the Continental Congress, major general, and member of the Constitutional Convention. Great content manuscript D.S. 'Tho Mifflin' as Governor of Pennsylvania, 1p. 20.75 x 11.5, Philadelphia, November 17, 1794, an official deed of land purchase from Samuel Cornes to Robert Morris (1734 - 1806) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, financier, and politician. He along with Alexander Hamilton and Albert Gallatin are regarded as founders of the U.S. financial system. The deed is for a tract of land called 'Bomal' in Luzerne County. Signed on the left margin by Mifflin, official seals still intact. Writing is slightly faded yet still discernable, creased, toned, scattered small holes. Co signed by Deputy Secretary of the Commonwealth James Trimble (1755-1837). Accompanied by two engravings of Mifflin and Morris. Robert Morris at this time was a senator for Pennsylvania but also involved in land speculation due to financial struggles. In April of that year Morris entered a partnership with fellow land speculator John Nicholson with the intention to purchase 1,000,000 acres of land in Luzerne, Northumberland, and Northampton counties of Pennsylvania and reselling them for profit. This purchase was very likely part of the same plan. As had happened multiple times over his career, Morris was eventually abandoned by his partners and left with all debts and obligations. A few years later during the Panic of 1797, Morris would default on his debts and spend three and a half years in prison. Though eventually released, he died in 1806 an impoverished man. No public ceremonies were held for him despite his profound influence on the founding of the country.
