(1819-1895) Confederate brigadier general who served under Beauregard at First Bull Run, and later under Johnston at Shiloh. War-date manuscript D.S. ‘Thomas Jordan', 1p. 4to., ‘Head Quarters Army of the Potomac', Manassas, July 4, 1861. ‘Special Orders No. 85:III' to be forwarded to Jubal Early. In part: ‘…To secure a proper and vital administration of the Quarter Master's Dept. with the advanced Forces of the Army of the Potomac, it has become necessary to detach Colonel Jas. L. Kemper 7th Regt. Va. Vols. and to assign him to duty in immediate charge of the services of the Quarter Master's Dept. in Fairfax County…By order of Brig. Genl. Beauregard…'. Brigadier general James L. Kemper (1823-1895) fought at First Bull Run, Seven Pines, Fredericksburg, and at Gettysburg, where he was desperately wounded and captured during Pickett's charge. Penned a few weeks before First Manassas and when the Confederate Army was still called the Army of the Potomac! Fine condition.
