Description:

(1743 - 1826) Third President of the United States, author and signer of the Declaration of Independence, ceased the importation of slaves to America. Excellent signed four-language ship's paper "Th. Jefferson" as President, 1p. 21" x 16 1/4", Washington [June 17, 1806], an official certification that permission has been given to ship master Nicholas Cooke of the American schooner Minerva of Providence, 71 tons, to proceed from Providence to Leghorn laden with "Sugar and Nankeens [yellow cloth]". Jefferson applied a large, bold signature at right center, and the document is countersigned by Secretary of State and future president JAMES MADISON (1751-1836). Both original paper seals remain attached. Other than original folds and light seal offsetting at Jefferson's signature, this document is in far better condition than usually found.
