Description:

(THOMAS J. JACKSON) MARY ANNA JACKSON
MARY ANNA JACKSON (1831-1915) Second wife, and subsequently widow, of Confederate Army general Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson. She was at Jackson's bedside when he died on May 10, 1863 and was widely known as the 'Widow of the Confederacy' for the next 50 years. Fine content and association A.L.S. 'M. Anna Jackson', 2pp. 8vo., Charlotte, Oct. 5, 1875 to Virginia Gov. JAMES L. KEMPER (1823-1895), formerly a Confederate major general himself who fought throughout the war with great distinction. She writes Kemper noting his invitation to attend 'the inauguration of Foley's Statue on the 23th inst....it affords me great pleasure to accept your kind invitation. To be the guest of Virginia is an honor I could not decline & this event is one fraught with such tender sacred interest to my heart that I will esteem it a high privilege to be present...I will be accompanied by a lady friend & my little daughter. With sentiments of high regards...' Lightly toned, else fine. Jackson's statue was erected in Capitol Square and prior to the dedication, Kemper agreed to let a black militia unit participate in the festivities. Former Gen. Jubal Early hotly protested, but Kemper wrote back 'the programme is fixed; all Hell can't change it.' The stature today is still controversial, but remains standing in the center of the square in Richmond, before the state capitol.
