Description:

THOMAS HUTCHINSON
(1711 - 1780) Royalist Colonial Governor of Massachusetts whose support of the Stamp Act led to the burning of his home. His repressive policies hastened the onset of the Revolution. Partly-printed D.S. as Governor, 1p. 16.25 x 15 in. (sight), Boston, Mar. 4, 1773, an official appointment of Caleb Thaxter to serve as 'Adjutant in the Regiment of Militia, in the County of Suffolk, whereof John Thaxter is Colonel...'. Boldly signed by Hutchinson under the official white paper seal at upper-left. Typical folds, a small bit of loss at two fold junctions, some toned spots as one would expect, overall very good. Set into a very attractive painted wood frame. Caleb Thaxter (1751-1828) survived the Revolutionary War though to whom he owed his allegiance is unclear. It is believed his brother Joseph fought for the Colonists at Bunker Hill. Our consignor and an auction record for the piece state that the verso of the document (not visible) bears a statement that Thaxter took the oath, and it is signed by John Thaxter and BENJAMIN LINCOLN (1733-1810), American Revolutionary War major general who commanded an army in the South, was captured at Charleston and later exchanged. He formally accepted the British surrender at Yorktown as Washington's second in command.
