Description:

THOMAS HOO
(c. 1396-1455) First Baron Hoo and Hastings, English Knight of the Garter and royal courtier. Made Keeper of the Seals and then Chancellor of France under King Henry VI. Manuscript D.S. in French and in secretarial hand on vellum, 1p., 14" x 3 1/4", [Mantes], Dec. 21, 1446. In part: "We Thomas Hoo Knight, Chancellor of France, Baron Hastings and one of the commissioners of the King our lord accredited to the government of France... We certify to all to whom it may appertain that by our command and order Jehan Varin, overseer and receiver at Mantes for the said lord has recently had carried by Jehan Halle, Jehan Pol called ''Tabellion'' and Colin Grandin several letters directed to Paris or Rouen upon the business of the king our said lord and the convention at present being held at the said city of Mantes, principally twenty letters carried by the said Halle to Paris for the Count de Dunois [Jean, "Bastard of Orleans"] and the president [of the assembly]..." Hoo adds his elaborate signature at the conclusion in black ink. Shows expected folds and soiling, else very good. The convention referred to in the document resulted in the marriage of Henry VI to Margaret Anjou, daughter of Rene I of Anjou, as well as the return of Anjou and Maine to Rene. The resulting peace lasted only until 1449, when the conflict was renewed by Charles VII of France. Present with the document are a typed transcription and translation, as well as a biographical sketch of Hoo and historical background of the treaty.
