Description:

THOMAS HOBBES (1588 - 1679) English philosopher and thinker, widely considered the father of modern political philosophy, best known for his 1651 book on social contract theory, "Leviathan". Hobbes's "Seven Philosophical Problems, and Two Propositions of Geometry", (London: Printed for William Crook at the Green-Dragon without Temple-Bar), written in 1662 yet published posthumously in 1682, 86pp. 8vo., in which Hobbes expounds upon multiple scientific and mathematical matters, yet notably adding an apology from the author, defending his religiosity and his work "Leviathan" against his many critics. In part: "...Your Majesty will be pleased to pardon this following short apology for Leviathan...There is nothing in it against Episcopacy; I cannot therefore imagine what reason any Episcopal-man can have to speak of me (as I hear some of them do) as of an Atheist, or man of no Religion, unless it be for making the Authority of the Church wholly upon Regal Power...I most humbly beseech Your Sacred Majesty not to believe so ill of me upon reports, that proceed often...from difference of Opinion...if snatching up all the weapons to fight against Your Enemies, I lighted upon one that had a double edge..." Sold with a partial section of "Tracts of Mr. Thomas Hobbes of Malmsbury", which contains Hobbes's lengthy response to a book which vehemently accused him of blasphemy, and a partial section of his "An Historical Narration Concerning Heresie, and The Punishment Thereof". All generally worn and toned, commensurate with age and use, else very good. Such accusations of unfaithfulness had been incredibly important to Hobbes, who himself wrote that "atheism, impiety, and the like are words of the greatest defamation possible".
