THOMAS GREEN
(1814-1864) American soldier who took part in the Texan Revolution and became a Confederate cavalry leader, killed in action during the Red River Campaign while charging Union gunboats. Rare, fine content war-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., ‘H.Q. Green Cav Brig', Washington, LA, Aug. 12, 1863, to a Dr. J.M. Bronough, in full: 'Capt West Commander of the Post at Washington, writes to me that the ladies of Flat Town have made a lot of mattresses and other billets for our sick at Washington. He says he wants a covered waggon [sic] & an ambulance to haul them he proposes that we furnish the ambulance. I wish you would furnish him an ambulance for the purposes expressed & see that it is done. I am just leaving for my new Camp 3 miles distant on the Flat Town road near Robards camp.' He signs ‘Tho Green' at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl'. Shows original mailing folds with some splits, mostly reinforced on the verso with archival tape, with archival tape mounting remnants. In very good condition overall.
