THOMAS E. ROSE
Colonel of the 77th Pennsylvania captured at Chickamauga and sent to Libby Prison in January 1863. During his train journey to Richmond, Rose escaped, only to be recaptured the following day. Once inside Libby Prison, he and fellow inmates dug a 50 foot tunnel over the course of three months. The tunnel allowed the escape of 109 soldiers including Rose. Sadly for Rose he was again recaptured and remained in Libby Prison until he paroled in 1864. Partly-printed D.S. "Thos E. Rose Col 77th Reg. Pa Vol" signed twice, 1p. oblong folio, Louisville, Ky., June 30, 1865, a requisition for pay for his two servants from July 1, 1863 to Feb. 9, 1864 described at the bottom as "Nat" of "Yellow complexion together with "Bob " who was of "Black" complexion. Pin hole at fold intersection, weak folds archivally repaired on verso, else fine.
