Description:

THOMAS E. LAWRENCE (1888 - 1935) "Lawrence of Arabia", British soldier and writer who led the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Turkish occupation which he described in his memoirs "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom", later served in the RAF and Tank Corps under assumed names, killed in a motorcycle accident. Rare A.L.S. "T.E. Lawrence", [London], May 29, 1922, in full: "Dear Mrs. Clark, I have been arranging with my bank. I will have L2500 to my credit at the end of this week: so as soon as your & my lawyers are through with the purchases we can complete. I like this better than a tiny deposit now & the rest later. Have you thought any more about when it would be convenient for you to give me possession?". One horizontal fold, light soiling, else very good. Sold with the original holograph transmittal envelope. Also present is a 12" x 14" plot plan showing "Col. Lawrence's Land" with an "Obelisk" shown in a corner of the property, with other adjoining properties also shown. In 1922 Lawrence resigned his position with the Colonial Office and enlisted in the RAF under an assumed name. After four months he was discovered by the press and discharged. With the help of a highly-placed friends he re-enlisted in the Tank Corps as "Thomas Edward Shaw". Between 1922 and early 1927 Lawrence revised "Seven Pillars" for publication, and edited an abridgement of the book. The parcel of land mentioned here is located in north-east London, along Epping Forest, where Lawrence retreated from the press and public to the privacy of his home, where visitors were few and far between. The obelisk mentioned very likely was a souvenir brought to England by Lawrence from Iraq.
