Description:

(1794 - 1865) U.S. senator who resigned his position to become the Secretary of the Treasury under President Millard Fillmore. Later in life he became the U.S. ambassador to Mexico as a staunch opponent to the Mexican-American War. A.L.S. as Secretary of the Treasury, 1p. 4to., Washington, Feb. 9, 1852, concerning the importation and exportation of goods. In part: '...Your letter of the 2 June last with various details upon the business forms and customs of your port is received...your attention as well to the third paragraph of No. 49; and also the act of Congress of the 3rd March 1837 which provides that... or merchandize shall be tried 'upon the given market value or wholesale price thereof at the period of exportation to the U. States in the principal markets of the country from which the same shall have been imported...' The left margin is fading, but the text is still clearly visible, mailing folds. Very good.
