Description:

THOMAS CAMPBELL...AND LORD BYRON!
THOMAS CAMPBELL (1777-1844) Scottish poet remembered for his sentimental poetry and stirring patriotic war songs "Ye Mariners of England", "The Soldier's Dream" and, in 1801, "The Battle of Mad and Strange Turkish Princes". Fine content A.L.S. 8vo. 2pp. June 4, 1832, Duke Street, St. James, concerning his affair with Lord Byron's Italian mistress and being caught in a compromising situation, in part: "....The countess is charming and she has brought me together with the Italian lady of Lord Byron - a nice bouncing good natured person. I have been just calling on her and fixing on a day to show her Richmond....On my way back to the Lecturing Union I hast been caught in a shower so that my cotton pantaloons are sticking to my skin. I must go home to change my clothes as quickly as may and beg your excuse for so short a letter - but best regards to Mrs. Madden...". A couple of light stains to left margin, else very good. With a second piece, a 4" x 5" portion of a letter written by LORD BYRON (1788 - 1824), totaling six words in his hand (not signed). On the verso is a note of provenance: "Lord Byron's handwriting given to me by Mr. Maturin - being part of a letter to his father respecting the tragedy of Bertham, Oct. 28th 1835". In 1815, Charles Maturin sent Byron a manuscript entitled "Bertham" which was completed with the latter's assistance in 1816. Maturin was Oscar Wilde's uncle by marriage. Fine.
