THOMAS C. WELSH
(1824 - 1863) Union brigadier general, command the 45th Pa. Infantry, participated in the battles of James Island, South Mountain and Antietam, where against steady opposition, his troops advanced a mile into Sharpsburg, the furthest Union advance of the battle. He later served under Grant at Vicksburg and marched with Sherman before dying of malaria. Very rare war-date A.L.S. signed TWICE, 2pp. 8vo., Louisville, June 8, 1863 to his wife Annie. In part: '...am going to leave here at 12 noon by Boat for Cairo...I sent you by Adams & Co. to-day $700.00 in green backs. I hope it will reach you soon...We are bound for Vicksburg to aid Grant. Boys are all well but fatigued. The troops have all gone by Rail Road except Co. K it is coming behind gathering stragglers...Kiss all the children from Papa...Acknowledge receipt of money soon as I shall be weary...'. He signs, adding his address at conclusion incorporating his name and rank. Fine. Accompanied by the Adams Express receipt for the cash shipment. Two pieces.
