Notorious British nobleman and diplomat, best known for his theft of the marble sculptures from the Parthenon in Athens, popularly known as "Elgin's Marbles". A.L.S. signed in text "Lord Elgin" on the face of his personal calling card, 1p. 24mo., [n.p. "Hotel Wagram", n.d.]. In full: "Lord Elgin would be glad to find That Dr. Rochester do him the favor of coming to see his Daughter this Evening, at, or soon after [illeg.] nine oC - I wd. beg Dr. R. to send him a line to the Hotel Wagrem to fix the hour".
