Description:

(1819 - 1885) 21st Vice President of the United States under Grover Cleveland for just eight months, opposed Radical Reconstruction and President Andrew Johnson's removal from office while serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. A.L.S. as Commissioner of the General Land Office under Franklin Pierce, 1p. 4to., Washington, Feb. 5, 1859, a snippy remark to Surveyor General for the Kansas and Nebraska Territories WARD B. BURNETT regarding a proposed change in accounting practices. In part: 'In reply to your letter of Jan'y 22 1859, inquiring the character of the 'certificate' desired to be endorsed on the back of the accounts of your Deputies and Clerks...the date of the certificate...was all that was asked to be endorsed...this suggestion was made to relieve your office of some superfluous writing, but if you prefer the mode thus far pursued, this office has no objection to make for it...' Docketed on the verso. Hendricks resigned as land office commissioner later that year, supposedly due to his disdain for Pierce's successor President James Buchanan and his efforts to make land office clerks patronage positions... which may explain Hendrick's harsh tone towards the Land Office clerks in the first place. Fine condition.
